Website or mobile app: which should you build first?
By Himanshu Sharma ·
Most small businesses ask for an app when a fast, responsive website would reach more people for less money. The decision gets easier once you look at how often customers come back.
Start with a website when
Your goal is discovery — people should find you on search, read what you do, and contact you. A website is indexable, shareable by link, and needs no install step.
- You depend on search traffic or ads.
- Visits are occasional rather than daily.
- You need to launch quickly on one budget.
Build an app when
Apps earn their cost when usage is repeat and device features matter: push notifications, offline use, camera, GPS or background sync. Delivery, booking and internal-operations tools are the usual fits.
The middle path
A well-built responsive web app installed to the home screen covers a surprising amount of app-like use. It is often the right first step, with a native build once real usage proves the demand.
